Scott Oki was born in San Francisco in 1930. He was the son of Japanese immigrants who had come to the United States to work on the railroads. Scott attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he became involved in the civil rights movement. He was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and participated in the Freedom Rides.

In 1966, Scott helped to found the Asian American Political Alliance (AAPA). The AAPA was one of the first organizations to advocate for the rights of Asian Americans. Scott served as the AAPA's national chairman from 1968 to 1970.

Laurie Oki was born in Honolulu in 1936. She was the daughter of a Japanese American father and a Caucasian mother. Laurie attended the University of Hawaii, where she became involved in the anti-Vietnam War movement. She was a member of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and participated in the protests against the Vietnam War.

In 1968, Laurie helped to found the Asian American Women's Association (AAWA). The AAWA was one of the first organizations to address the needs of Asian American women. Laurie served as the AAWA's national president from 1969 to 1971.

Scott and Laurie Oki were both pioneers in the field of Asian American studies. They were among the first scholars to write about the experiences of Asian Americans in the United States. Their work helped to lay the foundation for the field of Asian American studies, which is now a major area of study at universities across the country.
