History

Bath was founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD. The city was originally called Aquae Sulis, meaning "the waters of Sulis". Sulis was a Celtic goddess who was worshipped at the site of the Roman baths. The baths were built around a natural hot spring and were used by the Romans for bathing and relaxation.
