The regiment was mustered into the United States service on August 23, 1861, and left Ohio for the front on September 3, 1861. The regiment arrived in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 5, 1861, and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland. The regiment's first engagement was at the Battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky, on January 19, 1862. The regiment helped to repulse a Confederate attack and earned the praise of General George H. Thomas.
The regiment continued to serve in the Army of the Cumberland and fought in a number of major battles, including the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Stones River, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Battle of Chattanooga. The regiment also participated in the Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea. The regiment was mustered out of the United States service on June 8, 1865.
